This commission required that we supply structures for the Breakthrough in Science Awards held in San Francisco, California. Two distinctly separate areas were to be considered and with such a unique backdrop, provided by the NASA Ames Research Centre and a huge hangar designed to house airships as long as 345m careful consideration was required. Any structures needed to safely accommodate the number of guests, invited press and also reflect the nature of the BLS organisation and what it sets out to achieve.
The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and Life Sciences was founded by Sergey Brin & Anne Wojcicki, Jack Ma & Cathy Zhang, Yuri & Julia Milner and Mark Zuckerberg & Priscilla Chan. These prizes aim to celebrate scientists and generate excitement about the pursuit of science as a career. Funded by grants from The Brin Wojcicki Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Jack Ma Foundation and Milner Foundation, the laureates are chosen by selection committees comprised of prior recipients of the awards.
A large 24m dome, with its massive 365m2 floor area, was supplied to act as a cocktail reception area with a further 14m dome added to offer a separate 120m2 red carpet and press area. A connecting tunnel was also provided to link the two for easy passage between areas during the event.
Dryspace domes have excellent sound insulating properties due to their double skin construction so having each space as an independent structure would mean unwanted sound transference would be kept to a minimum. Inside, both structures were fitted with lighting, carpets and projection systems, finished by a raised cassette flooring system to add the final icing for this A-list event. Install was completed for this event within six hours.
